Add the cue length twice to the table's playing surface on each side to get the minimum room size. With standard 58-inch cues, an 8 ft table (44 × 88 inch playing surface) needs a room about 13 ft 4 in × 17 ft, a 7 ft table about 12 ft 11 in × 16 ft 2 in, and a 9 ft table about 13 ft 10 in × 18 ft. Shorter cues can rescue a tight room.
The room, not the table, sets the limit. Measure before you shop.
How to calculate
Room length = playing surface length + (cue length × 2). Room width = playing surface width + (cue length × 2).
Room size chart
| Table | Playing surface | 52 in cues | 58 in cues |
|---|---|---|---|
| 7 ft | 39 × 78 in | 11 ft 11 in × 15 ft 2 in | 12 ft 11 in × 16 ft 2 in |
| 8 ft | 44 × 88 in | 12 ft 4 in × 16 ft | 13 ft 4 in × 17 ft |
| 8 ft pro (oversize) | 46 × 92 in | 12 ft 6 in × 16 ft 4 in | 13 ft 6 in × 17 ft 4 in |
| 9 ft | 50 × 100 in | 12 ft 10 in × 17 ft | 13 ft 10 in × 18 ft |
Playing surface dimensions vary by maker; use the exact figure from the spec sheet.
When the room is short
- Keep a 48 or 52-inch cue for shots near walls.
- Choose a smaller table; a well-built 7 ft table plays better than a cramped 8 ft.
- Account for furniture, doors and posts that intrude on the stroke.
Floor and access
Slate tables are heavy and usually installed in pieces. Check stair access and floor capacity. One-piece and three-piece slate are covered in our slate vs non-slate guide.

Common questions
What size room do I need for an 8 foot pool table?
About 13 ft 4 in by 17 ft with standard 58-inch cues. Shorter cues reduce that.

Professional and many tournament tables are 9 ft, with a 50 × 100 inch playing surface.
Can I fit a pool table in a small room?
Use a 7 ft table and keep 48 or 52-inch cues for tight shots near walls.
How heavy is a slate pool table?
Often 650 to 1,000 pounds or more. Check that your floor can carry it, especially upstairs.
